Beyond the 3XL Tag: 6 Fit Checks for a Better Men’s Shirt

A 3XL tag can get you into the right part of the size chart, but it cannot tell you whether a shirt will sit well across your shoulders, stay comfortable at the waist, or move with you. For men shopping extended sizes, the goal is not simply “bigger.” It is enough room in the places that need it, with a shape that still looks intentional.

Use these six checks before you decide that a shirt fits. They work whether you prefer a close, regular, or relaxed silhouette.

Six fit checks that matter more than the label

  1. Start at the shoulders. The shoulder seam should land close to the edge of your shoulder unless the shirt is intentionally drop-shouldered. If it sits too far inward, the chest and upper back may feel tight. If it falls far down the arm, the whole shirt can look larger than intended.

  2. Check the chest without standing still. Button the shirt, take a full breath, then reach forward as if you are driving or picking something up. The front should not pull into horizontal lines, and the buttons should stay flat instead of gaping.

  3. Look at the midsection from the side. Fabric should skim or drape according to the cut you want. If the hem kicks forward or the shirt rides up when you sit, you may need more room through the stomach, a longer length, or a different cut—not automatically a larger size everywhere.

  4. Test the sleeve opening. Short sleeves should allow you to bend and lift your arms without pinching. If your upper arms need more room, compare the sleeve opening measurement as carefully as the chest measurement.

  5. Decide where the hem should finish. For an untucked look, the shirt should cover the waistband without swallowing the body. For a tucked look, raise both arms: if the shirt pulls free immediately, it may be too short for the way you plan to wear it.

  6. Do the real-life movement test. Sit, reach, cross your arms, and walk a few steps. A fit that only works in a mirror is not ready for a full day.

A live store example: the Arlo Shirt

The Men’s Arlo Shirt Green is currently listed in sizes S through XXXL. Treat that size range as a starting point, then check the live product details and available size selector before ordering. A label such as XXL or XXXL is not a universal body measurement, so compare any listed measurements with a shirt you already like.

Three ways to style a green shirt

1. Clean off-duty

Wear it open over a plain white or black tee, then add dark straight-leg jeans and low-profile sneakers. Keeping the base neutral lets the green do the work. If you want more shape, leave only the lower buttons open and push the sleeves slightly above the forearm.

2. Smart casual without stiffness

Button the shirt and pair it with black, navy, or stone chinos. Add a simple belt and loafers or clean leather sneakers. The outfit reads polished, but the short sleeves keep it relaxed. Check the button line after sitting so the shirt stays comfortable through the chest and midsection.

3. A coordinated set—sized piece by piece

Pair the shirt with the matching Men’s Arlo Shorts Green for an easy tonal look. The important part: choose the shirt and shorts by their own fit needs. Your best top size and best bottom size do not have to match. Check the waistband, rise, thigh room, and sitting comfort separately.

Before you buy

Measure a well-fitting shirt laid flat: chest, shoulder width, sleeve opening, and length. Compare those numbers with the product information instead of relying only on the letter size. If you need help finding details, contact contact@openclosetfashion.shop before ordering.

Ready to build the look? Start with the live Arlo pieces above, confirm the current size availability, and choose the fit that works when you move—not just when you stand still.
